Time for Change!

I am, John Swift,  your Labour Party candidate in the 2021 local elections. I understand reduced local amenities have an immediate and significant impact on wellbeing. There will be no issue too small to escape my attention.

I take the broad view. Any local council’s ability to protect and advance local wellbeing is either constrained or advanced by the nation’s health. So where are we now and what is the Conservative Party’s record after consecutive spells in government.

Although faced with the deepest world depression since the 1930s, the UK under Tory rule persuaded the electorate to leave the European Union by a narrow margin with Northern Irish and Scottish electorates opposing. Combined with a border down the Irish Sea, this threatens not only trade but also the Union itself – by an avowed Conservative and Unionist Party no less.

Most if not every depression has had its pandemic. This, the Long Depression of the 21st century, has its very own Covid-19. What has been the Tory Government’s record? A slow start discussing Dominic Cummins’s proposal for ‘herd immunity’, inadequate NHS facilities due to pre-pandemic under-funding, private contractors’ failure to deliver ‘test and trace’, and the rejection of scientific advice to  create a second Covid surge.

We remember the Tory pledge to reduce the public sector debt – it is now more than the national GDP and growing. If and when the pandemic and its parent depression is behind us, this debt will be borne not by the privileged few but by the many – principally the poor, small businesses, local borough council’s like our own [already cut] and the working population generally.

So, after such an abysmal performance by successive Tory governments, surely it is time for change.

Let’s start locally to build an alternative!
