The campaign to ensure the Conservative County Council do not cut Coleshill Fire Station is gathering pace.
Labour Councillor Claire Breeze has put forward a motion to Coleshill Town Council. It will be debated at Full Council on Wednesday 23rd January 2019. The meeting begins at 7pm.
You can read the motion below:
Since 2010, Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service has seen an almost £7million reduction in its annual budget. This has resulted in the loss of 50 firefighter posts, 2 wholetime and 3 retained fire stations close and 7 engines consigned to the scrapheap.
Government austerity has resulted in local services being reduced. Our Fire and Rescue Service has already taken its fair share of cuts.
There is now a proposal to make further cuts to the Fire and Rescue Service which would result in the removal of a retained firefighter crew at Coleshill Fire Station. This would reduce the number of fire engines at the station from 2 to 1.
Coleshill Fire Station is one of only three fire stations in North Warwickshire, covering an area of 110sq miles. It is located next to a number of major motorway junctions and is on the border of the West Midlands conurbation. It is the second closest fire station to the NEC, Birmingham Airport, Birmingham International Train Station and Resorts World. The Station covers not only the town of Coleshill but the many villages that surround it.
Coleshill Fire Station, its current level of resources and the number of firefighters at the station are all vital to maintaining the safety of Coleshill residents both in terms of tackling emergency fires and incidents but also in the constantly expanding work of fire prevention and community safety.
Coleshill Town Council therefore resolves to:
- Write to the Leader of Warwickshire County Council expressing our opposition about the proposed cuts to Coleshill Fire Station, asking her to think again and oppose the plans.
- Write to the County Councillors for Coleshill North and South expressing our regret that they voted to keep this proposal ‘on the table’ and did not ensure it was taken out of the budget debate at the earliest opportunity.
- Write to all North Warwickshire County Councillors asking them to vote against any proposal brought forward in future that provides for cuts to Coleshill Fire Station. This includes a reduction in fire fighter numbers, the number of engines or the station budget.
- Write to the Member of Parliament for North Warwickshire asking him to express his support for the retention of all current services at Coleshill Fire Station.
