The residents of Newton Regis and Warton ward have sent shockwaves through the local Conservative Party, turning one of their safest seats into a new ultra-marginal.
Labour candidate Andrew Downes fought a strong campaign, promising to put local people before property developers. Local people his campaign, reducing the Tory majority from 25% to 4%, a massive swing to Labour of just over 11%.
Speaking after the result, Labour’s Andy Downes said;
“I want to thank all of the residents who backed me in this campaign. This is a fantastic result, way beyond anything we could have hoped for at the start of this short by-election campaign. My team and I spoke to hundreds of local people and it was clear they wanted to change. It’s a big ask to win this seat first time round, it is after all the Tories third safest seat in North Warwickshire.
“So it means I’ll keep campaigning to put local people before property developers. I’ll be out and about, talking to local people over the coming months, aiming to win this seat next May because this area deserves change and after last night’s result, it’s clear that the Tories can’t cling on forever.”
