Arley Sports Centre looks set to be privatised after Tory run North Warwickshire Borough Council voted through a proposal that could see the authority transfer the building to a private company.

Despite fierce opposition from local residents, Conservative Councillors ignored the views of local people and pressed forward with plans to get rid of Arley Sports Centre.

Labour Councillors proposed an amendment which would have provided additional time to consider the outcome of the leisure review. A document Labour Councillors claim is full of mistakes and based on incorrect information.

Arley Borough Councillor, Jodie Gosling said;

“This Leisure Review is a frankly an insult for local people.¬† The evidence behind the review is outdated and in parts, incorrect. It cannot be right to make a decision, that effects our community so much, based on a document that just isn’t accurate.

“There is a strong feeling in Arley that the Council have set our centre up to fail. That it has been slowly run down and misrepresented over the past few years to justify getting rid of it but despite that, 38,000 people visited last year and it looks as if the cost of each visit will, this year, fall so that it is line with the other sports centers in our Borough.

“Arley will be singled out again and pay the price of more cuts. Labour will continue to fight and put forward better proposals for Arley and the Borough at the budget meeting on 21st February 2018.”

Labour Group Leader, Cllr Adam Farrell said;

“To base a decision on wrong information says everything you need to know about this Council. It is being run by Councillors you wouldn’t trust to organise a party in a brewery.

“That’s why we need a Labour Council, willing to put local people first and deliver real improvements for Arley. Our budget amendments next week will show the priorities we have for the future of North Warwickshire.”
