North Warwickshire’s Conservative MP has been criticised for claiming the Borough Council’s plans for nearly 10,000 new homes inNorth Warwickshire are linked to immigration in Coventry.

Craig Tracey MP told the House of Commons that North Warwickshire is having to build these new homes because we are taking overspill from Coventry and that Is because of immigration. Mr. Tracey says that now we have Brexit, these figures can be reviewed.

Leader of North Warwickshire Labour Group, Cllr Adam Farrell said

“This is quite frankly the biggest load of rubbish I’ve heard from Mr. Tracey. The number of homes North Warwickshire is planning to build is 9070. Just 540 of those are redistributed from the entire Coventry and Warwickshire Housing Market area.

Even if what Mr. Tracey said is true, which it isn’t, then we’d still have to build 8530 homes and it makes no real difference to the areas most affected by the Borough Council’s plans. The Government’s own Minister, Gavin Barwell MP has told Mr. Tracey that “the projection numbers do look at past trends and roll forward, so they are already assuming a reduction in the level of migration over the time period.’ His own Minister has said any reduction in immigration post Brexit is unlikely to make any difference to numbers in North Warwickshire.

Mr. Tracey says that we also having to take homes from other areas because of ‘Local Government Regulations’. This is again utter rubbish.

North Warwickshire is having to take homes from other areas because the Conservative Government introduced the’ duty to co-operate’ meaning that the Council has to legally talk to other authorities and show it has made a real effort to take homes that they cannot accommodate.

There can be no getting away from the fact that Mr. Tracey and his party have their fingerprints all over this plan for 9000 more homes, many to be squeezed into Dordon, Polesworth and Atherstone.

This is another example of Mr. Tracey voting for something in Parliament then pretending he is on the side of local people here in North Warwickshire. He promised during his election campaign to protect our countryside and now his party plan to build all over it.

Labour in North Warwickshire oppose building nearly 5000 of these new homes along the A5 in Dordon, Polesworth and Atherstone. We think other options should be explored, including a new settlement that would have the new schools, roads, health services and amenities that would be needed to support these new homes.”
