North Warwickshire Borough Council has voted to close Arley Sports Centre during the day for five days a week. The plans comeafter the Council was forced to U-turn on its original plan for closure following pressure from local residents and the Labour opposition.
The Sports Centre will soon be closed during the day Monday -; Friday with the possibility of further changes when the Council’s leisure review concludes in July 2017.
Leader of the Labour Group, Cllr Adam Farrell said;
“This decision has pre-empted the Council’s leisure review. It singles out Arley and smacks in the face of fairness. The Labour Group has always supported Arley residents in their mission to keep Arley open. We accept there is a need to change the way we operate the Sports Centre but the fairest way to do that is to come to a decision once all leisure services have been reviewed.
The idea that a decision to close the Sports Centre during the day is somehow a positive move is just political spin from a Conservative Council that has failed the people of Arley. This is another example of the incompetence shown by the Conservative administration at North Warwickshire who think they know best and who fail to listen to the people of our borough.”
Labour Councillors submitted an amendment to keep Arley Sports Centre open as it is now but this was voted down by Conservative Councillors including, Arley ward Councillors Mark Simpson and Colin Hayfield.
Cllr Farrell added,
“Arley ward Councillors have let their residents down. They’ve put their party first and shown utter contempt for democracy. The idea that this decision will somehow win them favor in the community they are supposed to represent is madness. The residents of Arley will see how their representatives voted to cut the hours of their Sports Centre whilst making no guarantee on its long term future.”
