Jacky_Chambers.jpgNorth Warwickshire Labour Group has responded to concerns about the future of Arley Sports Centre by stating they would not support the closure of the center now or in the immediate future.

Rumours have been circulating in the local community about the centers future and no official response has been released by the Council.

Labour Health Spokesperson, Cllr Jacky Chambers said;

“Physical inactivity and obesity are a major cause of early and preventable deaths in this Borough – and cost the local economy an absolute fortune through sickness, lost productivity and extra health care.

Leisure centres are one of the few places which offer everyone, whatever their age, the chance to get fit , meet other people , have fun and develop new skills . They play a vital part in promoting community health and mental well being.

Many years ago the Labour Council in North Warwickshire built Arley Sports Centre because we believed that, even in rural areas, children, young people and families need to have the opportunity for indoor physical and social recreation, to improve their health and to learn basic sporting skills which can last a lifetime.

We recognise that money is tight at the moment – not least because the Conservative Government is forcing huge and unfair cuts on District Councils such as North Warwickshire.

Under this current funding regime, if we were still in control of the Council, we would also have to look for savings -; and we would have to look at creative ways of keeping many services running for local people .

However we would not be looking to shut down leisure services as a way of saving money. We believe that the leisure services we fund are just as important for family health, as schools are for education.”
