People power wins

Battery_hens_-Bastos__Sao_Paulo__Brazil-31March2007.jpgThe application to build a Broiler House for 39,000 chickens near the North Warwickshire village of Mancetter has been withdrawn. Borough Council planners have made it clear that there was no prospect that it would succeed and Crown Waste Management, has withdrawn it.  The Nuneaton based company has however indicated that they will consider re-submitting a new application for planning permission next year, once they have had time to prepare further evidence to address the objections raised.

Mike O’Brien who has opposed the application from the start has welcomed the decision.  Mike spoke at a packed meeting in Mancetter Church on Monday predicting that the current application would fail.

Mike O’Brien said,

“This is a victory for people power. Villagers united behind the Mancetter Action Group led by Rev Tony Tooby and they have won this battle. Like many local people I was a formal objector to the proposal.chickens.jpg

“North Warwickshire Borough Council recognised the strength of local feeling and made it clear that the application would not succeed.  I congratulate the Action Group but also North Warwickshire Borough Council for winning this fight.  It’s not yet over because the company says it wants to come back with a new application next year. They will find the villagers are ready to fight them again next year if they came up with another chicken Broiler House.

“This battle has been won. It’s unclear whether the war is over but if the company wants to go to war again then we will be ready for them.”

Mancetter Parish Councillor Chris Tooby said,

“This is good news. We knew the voice of the people would be heard.  If they have any sense the company will consider another purpose for that site and maybe talk to the local community before imposing something like this on them.”

Rev Tony Tooby chaired the campaign meeting at the Mancetter Church on Monday, introducing the two main speakers, who were Ian Ritchie who lives in the village and former MP Mike O’Brien, who has offered support and advice to the campaign.

Mike O’Brien congratulated Rev Tooby, Ian Ritchie and the Mancetter Action Group on a powerful campaign.
