You’ll be robbed twice!

People who have their wheelie bin stolen will be hit by a tax on victims by North Warwickshire Tories.

The Conservative controlled Borough Council has today confirmed that victims of wheelie bin theft or criminal damage by vandals will now have to pay the Council £35 for a replacement.

Currently residents who have a bin stolen or damaged will have the bin replaced free of charge. But Conservative Councillors have decided to double penalise victims of crime by charging the additional £35.

Labour Group Leader, Cllr Adam Farrell said;

“Residents who have their bin stolen will now be hit with a £35 charge to replace it. You’ll be robbed twice. Once by the thief and then by your Tory council!

“Labour voted against the charge.  It is unfair on the victims of crime.  It also makes no financial sense.

“The Tories claim the Council will save £75,000 by imposing this £35 fine on the victims of crime!

“But the administrative costs of the scheme will be significant. There will be the cost of processing payments, dealing with disputes over stolen bins, trying to work out who damaged a bin. Over 2200 bins were issued last year, so this is a huge task. How much is it going to cost in staff time to process all of this? I suspect it is both a false economy and morally disreputable.

“The Council is telling residents hit with a £35 charge to claim on their home insurance! But some people, often the elderly or disabled have not insured their bins. In fact, I need to check my insurance, to see if I have insured my bin!  You just couldn’t make this up!”
