Waits in A&E and also on trolley’s rise at George Eliot and Walsgrave Hospitals

The full impact of local NHS cuts and the failed privatisation effort at George Eliot Hospital has been exposed in new government waiting time figures showing that the number of patients waiting longer than four hours before being treated in A&E has almost trebled and the number of hospital trolley waits for longer than four hours has more than doubled. These breach government targets.

Mike O’Brien, the Minister of State for Health in 2009-10 said,

“The NHS has been set back years by this government and it is affecting patients. When I was Health Minister I pressed the NHS to get down the delays in A&E and to cut trolley waits for hospital admission. Since 2010 the effort has stalled because managers have had to deal with funding problems, an unnecessary NHS reorganisation and the major distraction of privatisation. The latest waiting list figures are some of the worst since 2004. NHS Patients are paying the price of the failure of Tory ideology.

“In particular, George Eliot Hospital the figures are worrying. Managers were clearly distracted by the attempt to sell the contract to run the hospital to the private sector, which collapsed last March costing £1.8m.  They also had to cope with a £12m debt. I don’t blame the managers. I blame the Ministers who created the distractions from patient care.

“The latest figures published by NHS England for the A&E at George Eliot NHS Trust show that 992 people waited longer than four hours. The figures also show that 438 patients were forced to wait on trolleys for over four hours before being admitted due to lack of beds.”

Figures for the three months from the start of July to the end of September for George Eliot Hospital compared to the same quarter last year show  The figure has almost trebled  rising from 390 in the quarter, July to September 2013 to 992 in the same quarter in 2014, a rise of 602.

At University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire NHS at Walsgrave July to September 2013 there were 2,650 patients waiting over 4 hours, but in the same quarter in 2014 the figure was 3,346; a rise of 696 patients.

The figures also show that whereas in the July to September last year, 160 George Eliot Hospital patients waited longer than four hours on a trolley before they were admitted into hospital, this year in the same quarter, the figures escalated to 438 patients, an increase of 278.  The figures for the Walsgrave show 752 trolley waits in Q2 2013 and 887 in Q2 2014, an increase of 135.

Mike O’Brien has welcomed Labour plans to deal with the NHS crisis. “Labour’s costed plans will begin the process of repairing the NHS,” he said.  Labour will

  1.  Create a £2.5 billion a year Fund to support 20,000 more nurses, 8,000 more GPs, 5,000 more home care workers and 3,000 more midwives – funded by a mansion tax on homes worth £2 million or more, by ensuring that tax avoiders play by the rules and by a levy on tobacco companies.
  2. Repeal David Cameron's NHS changes that put private profit before patients, so that NHS professionals can focus on your care, not competition law.
  3. Guarantee a GP appointment within 48 hours, and the same day for those who need it.
  4. Guarantee a maximum one-week wait for cancer tests.

Mike added, "I know the the Prime Minister has recently claimed there are more doctors and nurses since 2010, but remember, it takes 10 years to train a doctor and three to five years to train a nurse, so most of them were recruited before he became 2010. Labour created the NHS and we must fight to save it from further damage.”
