Tory MP’s condemned for attacking Council tenants

The Government has succeeded in passing a new bill through the House of Commons that will mean an end to secure tenancies forCouncil tenants. The new Housing and Planning Bill was voted on in the House of Commons on 12th January 2016 with both local Tory MP’s supporting the Government.

Councillor Dom Ferro, Labour Councillor for Coleshill North said,

“The bill means Council tenants will no longer have a secure tenancy and be subject to eviction every few years. What makes it even worse is that Tory MPs, including Craig Tracey, walked through the lobby to vote against an amendment that would legally require landlords to make properties fit for human habitation, that would have seen a Council house built to replace any sold off under right to buy and an amendment that would have given local people first dibs on new homes in the local area.

Labour in Parliament oppose changes to give council tenants insecure tenancies, we would legally require landlords to brings homes up to standard and we would ensure local people can get in first when new local homes are built.”
