The Queens Speech: What was the point?

Commenting on the Queens Speech today Mike O’Brien has said,

businessdesk__1301567120_Mike_OBrien_No5.jpg“This is meant to be the great Parliamentary occasion, to set out the direction of the country.

"Given the seriousness of the problems facing this country in the economy, the banks, the NHS, schools and the energy market, this is a government with little to say; run out of ideas and run out of steam.  People in North Warwickshire and Bedworth will ask: what’s the point of this government?

“What was needed was Bills to break up the banks, freeze energy prices and reform the energy market, control rents, stop privatisation of the NHS and stop British workers being undercut by immigrant labour.  Instead the coalition has only 11 Bills on such subjects as the reform of annuities, make fracking easier and outlawing slavery.

“Squabbles over knife crime and education policy have created a "zombie" Parliament, where MP’s walk like into the lobbies and collect a salary, but they make little difference on the big issues. Parliament is just ticking over until the general election next year.”
