Local Arley resident and Arley Sports Centre campaigner Jodie Gosling has been elected as the new Borough Councillor for Arleyand Whitacre winning 60% of the vote in Thursday’s by-election.

Newly elected Councillor Gosling said;

“I want to thank the people of Arley and Whitacre who supported me on Thursday, it is a real honour to represent the area that I live in, on the Borough Council. I’m naturally delighted with the result and over the next few months and years I will aim to meet the very high standards I believe local residents expect and deserve from their Councillors.

I promised during the election campaign to work hard for our communities and over the next few weeks & months I will set out how I plan to achieve that. I will build on the work I already do in our community to try and make this area an even better place to live.

Of course, one of the biggest issues in this by-election was the Conservative plans to close down Arley Sports Centre. I campaigned to keep our Sports Centre open and my position today remains the same. Labour support Arley Sports Centre and want to see it remain open. The Conservatives at the Borough Council should listen to the message local residents sent on Thursday.”

Commenting on the by-election result, Labour Group Leader Cllr Adam Farrell said;

“Jodie Gosling will be a fantastic Borough Councillor for Arley and Whitacre. She was already an active member of the local community and now she has the opportunity to be the area’s voice on the Borough Council.

As we campaigned in the area for this by-election, it was clear that local people deserve better. Hunrdeds of them had issues that hadn’t been resolved, many of them felt isolated and nearly everyone felt forgotten by politics and politicians.

This by-election saw a 34% increase in the Labour vote. It’s said to be the largest increase in the Labour vote anywhere in the country since the last General Election. The scale of this victory cannot be underestimated, this was Labour’s largest ever share of the vote in the Arley and Whitacre ward.”
