EU Referendum Result

Speaking after the EU Referendum result, the Leader of North Warwickshire Labour Group, Cllr Adam Farrell said;

“The result on Thursday was not the result my colleagues and I had campaigned for. We passionately believe that Britain is stronger, safer and better off in the European Union.

It is vital that our country now comes together because we are currently more divided, at least politically, than at any point over the last 50 years. I recognise that if you voted to leave it doesn’t make you a racist but if you voted to remain it also doesn’t make you some sort of tree hugging Europhile. I hope others will also make this distinction over the coming weeks and months.

The debate since the result has taken a worrying tone based on attacking each other’s views whilst neglecting the huge task we now have in front of us of developing new trade deals,

Whether you voted to remain or leave, the country has made its decision and it’s important now that we do two things. Firstly that we get the best possible deal for Britain in our exit talks with the EU and secondly that we start to repair the divide that now exists in our country

In North Warwickshire we’ll need clarity on what will happen to the current European LEADER funding programme, how European investment being withdrawn from the business community will be replaced and what changes local authorities will need to make as we withdraw from the EU.

It will also be important that private sector investors are given the confidence to buy into our borough and that they know North Warwickshire is open for growth regardless of our EU membership.

I’ll be seeking assurances from the Borough Council that discussions have already begun to deal with these vital issues for our Borough.

Leaving the EU is not a silver bullet and many of the reasons people voted to leave for, cannot be solved by exit alone. That is not to denounce leave voters but to highlight to leading Brexiteers, that if we want to build on this high voter turnout as a way to promote democracy, the people who voted to leave can not be let down with false promises and U-turns.”
