Double whammy - as defections hit local Conservatives

Conservative Councillors on North Warwickshire Borough have been battered by their second defection in a week.

Last week the Conservative Councillor for Water Orton, Allan Holland resigned from the party. Now, former Conservative Borough Councillor Carol Fox has crossed the floor and joined the Labour Party, stating that,

“Only Labour are the real party of the people in North Warwickshire”.

After many years on the council, Cllr Carol Fox, left the Conservative Party in 2013 and has since sat as an Independent.  Speaking about joining Labour, Cllr Fox said,

“I left the Tory party 18 months ago after getting sick of the lazy self-importance of the old boys’ network in operation.  It was deeply unpleasant.

“Becoming an Independent Councillor, gave me the chance to watch each party at work objectively.

“I am now convinced that only Labour are the real party of the people in North Warwickshire.   The Labour Councillors care about local people.  They don’t have the inflated egos of some local Conservatives.

“I am partly joining Labour because I saw how the Conservative candidate behaved as the local party chairman and he is just not up to being an MP.

“By contrast Mike O’Brien cares and has the strength and experience to deliver for our area. I’m backing Mike.

“Frankly, the truth is that locally, the Labour guys are just more effective and they are doing a good job for local people. North Warwickshire Council has not raised the council tax for three years and yet they have maintained local services. That is a remarkable achievement in the face of cuts in central government funding to councils by 40%.

“They have also built a new Leisure Centre in Packington Lane in Coleshill. I watched for 8 years as the Conservative Councillors squabbled and dithered whilst the old Leisure Centre deteriorated. Labour were elected in 2011 and made decisions sensibly and quickly. Labour are not only decent people, they are competent.

“I know this Labour Council is delivering for North Warwickshire. I’m looking forward to getting stuck in and building on the Labour Council’s achievements.”

Mike O’Brien said,

“In recent years many former Conservative voters have switched to Labour, but this decision to join Labour by a high profile, long serving and respected local councillor like Cllr Carol Fox is very warmly welcomed indeed. Carol was gained a reputation as a strong-willed local champion who works hard for the people she represents. It’s great to have her join us.”

Cllr Mick Stanley, the Council Leader, speaking from his hospital bed following a car accident has also welcomed Cllr Fox. He said,

“This is brilliant news. I have spoken to Cllr Fox several times and I know that she has given this move a great deal of thought. I welcome her to the Council Labour Group.”
