County Council rejects motion to put street lights back on, but MPs claim it has been accepted

227-mike_obrian.jpgWarwickshire County Council has rejected a Labour motion to turn the street lights back on. The vote at County hall in Warwick saw the Conservative led council defeat the Labour motion that the lights be turned on immediately, pending the proposed roll out of energy efficient LED lights across the county.

Labour proposed the LED lights two years ago but the Conservatives adopted the proposal this year and have put in a bid for government funding to convert the streetlights more quickly.  However up to now the Conservative Councillors have denied that the LEDs would lead to the lights going back on.

The Conservative MPs for North Warwickshire and Nuneaton have welcomed the LEDs and claimed it means the streetlights will be switched on.  This has taken people by surprise because the motion to turn the lights on had just been rejected.

Labour’s Mike O’Brien has led the local campaign to switch the streets lights back on in Warwickshire for the last two years and also supported the LED lights.

He says, “The Conservative County Councillors have just voted down a motion to switch the streetlights back on but the MPs have claimed the lights will be switched on. Their position is as clear as mud.  Have the Tory MPs adopted the Labour policy to turn the streetlights on immediately? In which case I welcome the conversion. Or do they want a delay for some reason?  Are they saying they can only be switched on if the council bid to the Government for money for LEDs is approved? Its unclear. As far as we are aware the position of the Conservative County Councillors remains opposed to the lights going back on.

What I know from canvassing thousands of local people over the last two years is that there is over whelming demand for the lights to go back on. We need a firm decision by the County Council that they go on now. But when Labour called for that, it was rejected by the Conservative led council.”
