Council does a U-turn and votes to join WMCA

North Warwickshire Borough Councillors have voted to join the West Midlands Combined Authority just months after condemningthe idea and claiming it would be a step closer to becoming part of Greater Birmingham.

The Conservative controlled Council originally voted on the issue in 2015 and were very clear then, that they did not want to join. Last night, the Council unanimously voted to join the new combined authority.

Labour Group Leader, Cllr Adam Farrell said:

“Labour have always been clear, we see huge benefits in joining the combined authority.

We’d prefer it if the Government stopped slashing local Council budgets and just allowed us to get on with the job of delivering local services with the funding we need to do this. The Government has however decided that funding is to be devolved to the combined authority so its really important North Warwickshire gets its fair share.

In order to get our fair share we need to be round the table. The vote the Council has now taken will enable us to do just that.

Now that we are a member of the Combined Authority, it is really important North Warwickshire develops a plan of what services and infrastructure we want delivered through the devolution deal. We have to look at how we can use this as a method of improving public transport, re-opening train stations and ultimately making it easier for local people to access local jobs.

And on jobs, we have to promote a vision for the type of jobs and the sort of the economy we want to create here for the next 20-30 years.

It’s now up to the Conservative Leader to fight our corner at the Combined Authority. Only time will tell if he can get this right.”
