Council By-election to be referendum on abolishing Borough?

Labour’s candidate in the Bedworth West by-election on 12 December, has spoken out about the call by the Conservative Leader of Warwickshire County Council to abolish Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council and transfer all of its powers to the County Council at Warwick. Brian Hawkes has pledged to fight to keep power local at the Borough and he says the by-election will be a referendum on whether power should be taken away from the Town Hall in Nuneaton and given to County Hall in Warwick

Cllr Hawkes, who is a Borough Councillor, said,

“Power should stay local and close to people. By abolishing the Borough Council and transfering power miles away to Warwick the Conservatives are taking power further away from local people.

“The government has already taken away planning powers from borough councils through the National Planning Policy Framework, now they are proposing to take the Borough Council away completely.

“I oppose the Tories moving power to Warwick. These people switched off our streetlights, closed Bedworth Heath Library, took away the youth worker from Keresley, cut school funding, want to privatise our hospital and now they want to abolish our borough council.

“There has arisen a new dividing line in this county council by-election between the Tories who want to centralise power and Labour fighting for local government. If the Tories want to make this by-election a referendum on whether power should be taken away from local people or not, then bring it on. I will fight to keep things local.”
